How to Build an Energy-Efficient Factory from the Ground-Up

According to this industrial LED lighting company in Ontario, choosing LED lights over incandescent or fluorescent lighting can reduce the cost of lighting your building by 75%. That’s just one of many ways Canadians can plan for industrial energy efficiency. Consider that and other factors when you’re planning to build an energy-efficient factory.

Building Location and Orientation

Consider which side of the building will get the most passive solar gain. Adding wide windows on this wall to maximize solar gain can help reduce heating costs in the winter, which is a significant cost for Canadian business owners, especially in large facilities. Heat gain in the summer can be reduced with window coverings.

Curb appeal might not be all that important when it comes to industrial zones, but there are other good reasons to consider landscaping around the building. Planting deciduous trees on the west and south sides of the building can help shade it from sunlight in the summer, reducing cooling costs. In the winter, these trees will lose their leaves, allowing the sun to contribute heat the building.

Sealing and Insulation

The quality and volume of insulation is one of the single-biggest energy factors in factory facilities. Good insulation will maximize the efficiency of your HVAC system. Having well-sealed windows, doors, vents and sills is just as important.

Tradeforce Tech, an industrial LED lighting company in Ontario, notes that companies are finding LED lighting to be the most economical lighting to own and operate. Current LED lights are sufficiently bright to provide safe coverage of work areas. LED light bulbs are also the most durable form of lighting available to factories today, ideal for very hot or cold working conditions.

Energy Management

Large facilities are wise to invest in an energy management system that ensures their lighting and HVAC are operating at peak efficiency. IoT-enabled devices are increasingly prevalent in manufacturing industries because they enable greater control over how facilities and their occupants consume energy. Implementing an energy management also reduces the time spent monitoring various building systems.

Renewable Energy Sources

Canadian industries are increasingly turning to small-scale renewable energy sources to offset and supplement their use of energy on the grid. Many factory facilities are being built to accommodate solar panels and heat recovery systems. In some provinces, it is businesses can benefit from government rebates for embracing renewable technology.

Drug Testing Through Bloodwork: How it Works

A blood test measures the amount of certain drugs in a person’s bloodstream at the moment the test is administered. It is one of the surest ways of confirming whether a person is or has been using drugs.

There are a number of circumstances where officials use drug testing through bloodwork, including as pre-employment drug testing, testing athletes for performance-enhancers, and testing following an on-the-job accident.

Drug testing through bloodwork is recognized as the most accurate way to determine whether someone is intoxicated. However, because it is costlier and more invasive than other drug tests, it is seldom used in an employment setting.

Other forms of drug testing by employers is relatively common in the United States, but in Canada, few employers have the legal grounds to test employees for drug use either before or during the course of employment.

How Drug Testing Through Bloodwork Works

To test for drugs, a medically-trained administrator draws a blood sample from the person to be tested using sterile equipment. Since this requires specialized tools and training, it should only be done by a professional (click here to find out if there is a service in your area.)

Once the sample is collected, it is sent to a certified laboratory to be subjected to an immunoassay test. This determines whether there are drugs or metabolites in the sample. If the test flags the presence of a drug, it is then screened using a gas-chromatography-mass-spectrometry (GC-MS) machine to confirm and measure the amount of the drug.

The two-step process of drug testing through bloodwork ensures accuracy and reduces the chance of false positives.

Depending on the purpose of the test, administrators may screen for a specific drug or a number of different drugs. Many employers use what is known as a five-panel test, which screens for amphetamines, cannabis, cocaine, PCP, and opiates. Others use a broader nine or ten-panel test that also looks for certain prescription drugs that are known to be used for recreational use.

How long a drug stays in a person’s system depends on a number of factors. Drugs with a longer half-life will be detectable for longer after use, and it can vary between individuals based on things like hydration and frequency of use.

The results of drug testing through bloodwork can take between a few days and a few hours, depending on the laboratory in which is processed.

Where to Get Part 1 of JHSC Certification in Ontario

Workplaces in Ontario with 20 or more regular employees at their work site are required by the Occupational Health and Safety Act to establish a joint health and safety committee or JHSC. The government defines a JHSC in its Guide for Health and Safety Committees and Representatives as such:

A joint health and safety committee (JHSC) is composed of worker and employer representatives. Together, they should be mutually committed to improving health and safety conditions in the workplace. Committees identify potential health and safety issues and bring them to the employer’s attention and must be kept informed of health and safety developments in the workplace by the employer. As well, a designated worker member of the committee inspects the workplace at least once a month.

A JHSC in Ontario must have at least one worker member and one supervisor member of the committee with JHSC certification. Part 1 of JHSC certification involves training on the fundamentals of health and safety in general.

What is Part 1 of JHSC Certification?

The first part of certification training consists of 19.5 hours of instruction over the course of three days. It may take place three days in a row or be spread out over several weeks. Different training providers offer different training schedules.

Part one training concerns fundamentals of health and safety that apply broadly to a variety of different kinds of workplaces. It is meant to educate the JHSC representatives on their role as members of the committee so they can carry out their duties responsibly.

Topics discussed in Part 1 include occupational health and safety law, the duties and responsibilities of management, supervisors, and workers, how to recognize health and safety hazards in the workplace, and how to assess, control, and evaluate hazards.

Members must complete Part 1 before they can move onto Part 2, which builds on that knowledge and focuses on specific hazards in the member’s own workplace. They must complete Part 2 within six months of Part 1. Certification remains valid even after members move from one workplace to the next.

Where to Get Certification Training

The Chief Prevention Officer of the Ontario Ministry of Labour sets out the criteria training providers must meet to deliver an approved JHSC certification program. To meet the requirements of the Ministry of Labour requirements and the Occupational Health and Safety Act, members must receive training from an approved provider.

Individual instructors do not need ministry approval. The providers are responsible for ensuring their instructors meet the ministry’s standards.

The Ministry provides a list of approved providers on its website.

Some Lacking Health Elements

There are many wonderful features of the south.  However, sometimes it lacks health elements that people need.  Many children lack a number of nutrients, and due to the lack of health and safety features in Mexico, they are not able to access the proper nutrients they need to develop properly.  These nutrients include Calcium, Iron, Potassium and more.

To solve this nutrition issue, I have come across one nutrient that can be made readily available to anyone in the world.  It’s an inexpensive replacement for iron – Lucky Iron Fish.  What this essentially is, is a little fish made from iron that you can cook in soup.  It can be used many times over and over again.  Through drinking the soup, you can receive the proper iron supplements you need.

This will help control the balance the deficiency that many of these children have.  It’s not just for kids, it’s for anyone requiring an iron supplement.  As for the calcium deficiency, I guess it’s lucky that Mexico produces a lot of oranges.  Calcium is needed for proper bone growth.  Without it, the health of your bones will deteriorate and will be easily broken.  That is definitely not something we want for small children who are going through developing bodies.

Hopefully eventually, Mexico can become a place where everyone is able to access these best iron supplements for kids as well as proper health care and safety.  Although parts of Mexico can be safe like Cancun, there are many other parts that are filled with hunger, disease and danger.  The least we can do right now is to try to fix the lacking of certain health elements.  As for now, this is all we can do without the government intervening.  We can look for more ways to provide nutrients to people who either cannot afford it or cannot get access to it.

A short coverage of why I got into writing about the south

The south is an interesting place. From New Mexico over to Southern California you tend to see a lot of variation in terms of climates, cultures, and people. How exactly one defines “the south” is an interesting question. There is a rich history of turmoil and political strife over the land of the south. Much of Texas, New Mexico and surrounding states were at one point owned by Mexico, and taken during the Mexican- American war of the mid 1800’s. Mexico lost the war due to instability, lack of planning, and poor military leadership and strategy. This was a disastrous result of a bloody, and unfair war. You can read more on the wikipedia article, here.

The loss of the land (like almost all of Texas) lead into a period of emotional downturn within the country of Mexico. People wondered what exactly went wrong and what sort of political leadership led to this result. This in turn lead to a political turn where people began to wonder about the efficiency and quality of the Mexican leadership.

Mexico today is a very complicated country. There are areas like Cancun and Cayo Coco where tourists go and are incredibly safe. There are also areas like Juarez that many people would not be as safe. Just recently two surfers traveling through Bandit territory on the Baja peninsula ran into some trouble and faced a major issue with some mexican druglords. They were never found unfortunately. The only remnant was a burned out van that remained off of a main road.

Not all of Mexico is bad. Of course, there are some climate related issues that have emerged in recent times. The lack of the prevalence of the Humboldt squid is a major signifies that things in the climate may be changing.

Over the next few posts I am going to be focusing on a wide range of topics about the south- hopefully you have a chance to read further!
